The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:06 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Doyle, Dyck, Enverga, Lovelace Nicholas, Manning, McPhedran, Mégie, Pate, Patterson, Raine, Tannas and Watt (12).

In attendance: Brittany Collier and Sara Fryer, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 15, 2016, the committee continued its study on the new relationship between Canada and First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue. No. 16.)

William Wicken, Professor, Department of History, York University.

Marie-Pierre Bousquet, Full Professor/Director, Indigenous Studies Program, University of Montreal.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Wicken and Ms. Bousquet each made statements and answered questions.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 17, 2016, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-3, An Act to amend the Indian Act (elimination of sex-based inequities in registration). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 13.)

The chair made a statement.

The Honourable Senator Manning moved:

That the amendment moved by Senator McPhedran and adopted by the committee on Wednesday, May 30, 2017, be to clause 1, page 1, after line 7 and that the draft report on the bill be modified accordingly.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:24 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
