The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-13 of the Rules of the Senate, to organize the activities of the committee.

Mark Palmer, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, as clerk of your committee, it is my duty to preside over the election of the chair.

[Translation]

I am ready to receive a motion to that effect.

[English]

Senator Patterson: I move that Senator Lillian Dyck become the chair of the committee.

Mr. Palmer: Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

Mr. Palmer: All right. I invite the Honourable Senator Dyck to take the chair.

Senator Lillian Eva Dyck (Chair) in the chair.

The Chair: Thank you very much.

I would like to move that the Honourable Senator Patterson be deputy chair of the committee.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: We have a number of motions to go through. For expediency, is it okay that I just move each one without reading and you look at the number on your sheets?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Motion No. 3 — do I have to ask for a mover?

Mr. Palmer: Yes.

The Chair: Can someone move it? So moved by Senator Patterson.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Carried.

Motion No. 4: Can I have a mover? Senator Tannas.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Carried.

Other Business: Senator Patterson.

Senator Patterson: Madam Chair, most of us present were involved in the committee's study on First Nations housing on reserves in the last Parliament. If it's in order, I'd like to move that this committee recommend to the Senate that we seek a government response to our report.

The Chair: It is possible, apparently, that we can do it tomorrow with leave of the Senate, or when we come back.

Senator Patterson: I'd like to add to my motion that we seek leave of the Senate to get the approval of the Senate at our session tomorrow.

The Chair: Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Carried.

Senator Patterson: Thank you.
