The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:46 p.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Christmas, Coyle, Doyle, Dyck, Griffin, LaBoucane- Benson, Lovelace Nicholas, McCallum, McPhedran, Pate, Patterson and Tannas (12).

In attendance: Brittany Collier and Marlisa Tiedemann, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 28, 2019, the committee continued its examination of the subject matter of Bill C-91, An Act respecting Indigenous languages. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No 50.)

WITNESSES:

First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centres:

Claudette Commanda, Executive Director.

First Peoples' Cultural Council:

Tracey Herbert, Chief Executive Officer (by video conference);

Susanne Gressner, Research and Development, Linguist (by video conference).

As an individual:

Lorena Sekwan Fontaine, Indigenous Academic Lead, Associate Professor, University of Winnipeg;

Imelda Perley, Elder-in-Residence, Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre, University of New Brunswick (by video conference).

Saskatchewan Indigenous Cultural Centre:

Wanda Wilson, President.

T'selcéwtqen Clleq'mel'ten/Chief Atahm School:

Robert Matthew, Principal.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Commanda, Ms. Fontaine and Ms. Herbert each made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:54 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Perley, Ms. Wilson and Mr. Matthew each made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
